Karla is interested in examining the lived experiences of mixed-status migrant families, including family separation, reunification, and parentification. She is especially interested in how intersecting identities shape these experiences and the dynamics between undocumented children and their U.S. citizen siblings.
Bio
Karla is an M.A./Ph.D. student in the Department of Communication. Karla received her B.A in Sociology and a minor in Applied Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2023. Her research interests include family separation, reunification, legal violence, and parentification in mixed-status Latina/o families. She is also interested in arts-based storytelling about the experiences of children brought to the United States at an early age and their parents’ migration journeys. Her research examines how family communication patterns, intersecting identities, and anti-immigration policies shape these experiences.
