The University of California, Santa Barbara NSF-sponsored Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Research and Training (IGERT) program in "Network Science and Big Data" will train 25 PhD students over the next 5 years to become experts in the next generation of network science. The program brings together faculty and students from seven disciplinary backgrounds -- Computer science, Communication, Ecology, Evolution & Marine Biology (EEMB), Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), Geography, Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Sociology. All of these areas are grappling with the same core issues of extending and applying network science to address large-scale computing challenges in areas as diverse as studying idea flows through social media networks to the mapping of gene regulatory networks, or food webs in environmental science.
