Mission
The UCSB Department of Communication is internationally known for its research and education in communication processes and effects. Our mission is to provide theoretically motivated, innovative, and rigorous research, teaching, and service. We help students, researchers, and professionals understand how communication is developed, interpreted, and exchanged to inform, influence, and connect across a wide range of social contexts and cultures.
Teaching & Research
Teaching and research are vital activities for the Department of Communication at University of California, Santa Barbara. Our department offers over 65 different courses to more than 1200 undergraduate majors and over 25 different classes to our 35 graduate students in three core areas—interpersonal and intergroup communication, organizational communication, and media studies.
Faculty Awards

Dave Seibold, 2013 Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award, International Communication Association
Awarded for his exemplary role model as a scholar, teacher, and advisor. For over 35 years, he has had a major impact on former students who are scholars at notable universities. His mentorship extends through his teaching awards and recognition, thesis and dissertation advising, co-authoring with students, mentoring graduate students outside the field of communication, mentoring of junior faculty, and guidance of undergraduate students in academic achievement and career development.
Michael Stohl, 2013-2014 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant to Denmark
Dr. Stohl will be at the Danish School of Media and Journalism from September to November 2013, working on a book entitled, "Global Media Moments". The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Award is granted to a scholar who can enrich the educational, political, economic, social and cultural lives of countries around the world. Awardees demonstgrate the qualities of service, excellence, and leadership that have been the hallmarks of the Fulbright Program for more than 60 years.
Howard Giles, 2013 Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award
Awarded to a faculty member with a sustained record of distinguished teaching, Howie Giles is the only UCSB faculty member who has received all three awards given by the Academic Senate: Faculty Research Lecturer Award, Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award, and now the Distinguished Teaching Award.
