Communication Department Peer Advisors

Meet your 2008-2009 Peer Advisors! Our Peer Advisors are Communication majors who have already completed the prerequisites and several upper-division courses. They are well-informed and eager to help. They hold regular office hours, and are located in Social Sciences and Media Studies, Office 4007.

Communication Graduate School Resource Library

The Peer Advisors are building a large library of resources for graduate programs of interest to Communication majors throughout the US. Feel free to visit during their office hours to browse this information. Please note that materials cannot be removed, nor will they be photocopied for you, so be prepared to take notes!

What do you suggest I take if I want to be a ______?

Are you interested in a particular career, but unsure of which Communication courses are best suited for that vocation? We have compiled a short list of professions that are popular with Communication majors, and paired them with some courses that might aid the pursuit of these careers. Although this is only a guideline designed to help give you direction, not prescription for what you must or should take, we hope that you find it useful.

Communication Career Opportunities

The UCSB Counseling and Career Center is an excellent resource for students as they search for career opportunities. You can visit them in their pink building with green trim, located next to the Humanities & Social Sciences Building, adjacent to Storke Tower.

Also attend the Communication Association meetings held Thursday's at 7pm. It's a great way to make both career and internship contacts.

The UCSB Alumni Association's Career Connections program can serve as a great tool students in terms of providing career exploration resources.

Networking with professionals in one's chosen field can be as important as the education received in the classroom. Career Connections was created as a way for students and alumni to gain information and insight to aid in making career decisions. UCSB alumni in a wide variety of occupations have volunteered to participate in the program and welcome questions from students and other alumni about their professions. In addition to the address and phone number, each listing includes year of graduation, graduate work, career experience, present job title and a brief description of responsibilities. A list of potential questions to ask the interviewee is also included. It is important to note that this is an opportunity to gather information and begin making contacts - it is not a job or internship service.
