Report of the External Review Committee

According to a recent review of the department by the External Review COmmittee, our department is among the tops in the nation, "The quality of the Department of Communication at UCSB is excellent. The department meets high standards for teaching, research, and service. The faculty in the department is among the most productive in the country."

Graduate Awards & Academic Stats

For the 2008-2009 academic year, the Department of Communication received 182 applications for admission to the graduate program. A total of 4% were admitted, compared to 29% university wide.

Record of Success at Conferences

  • NCA: 14 papers with student authors
  • ICA: 19 papers with student authors
  • 61% first authored
  • 25 recognized as award winning
  • Two thesis awards & one dissertation award

Publication rate:

  • Authors on 25 journal articles and chapters in the past year

The video gaming industry has exploded in the past decade surpassing that of the movie industry and reaching up to 11.5 billion dollars annually. With such a market, it’s no surprise that many people have become interested in video gaming including our department’s professor Rene Weber, a communication scholar, neuroscientist, and a former game addict.

Because of their dedication and commitment, our undergraduate students receive special attention inside and outside the classroom. Lambda Pi Eta Hosts Fall Grad Panel

    The Pi Xi Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, National Communication Honor Society has launched another busy year. On Wednesday, October 21, 2009, LPE hosted its annual Fall Grad Panel which included faculty and graduate students from UCSB's Department of Communication including Professors Walid Afifi, Karen Myers,and Dave Seibold, as well as graduate students Amanda Denes, Andrea Joseph,and Abby Prestin. Panel participants talked about choosing graduate programs, graduate school applications, and criteria that graduate programs use for evaluating applications.
