Communication Association, Department of Communication

The Department of Communication Student Communication Association, advised by Professor Anna Laura Jansma, held its annual Internship Mixer on Tuesday evening, February 25, 2014, in Corwin Pavilion.  The Association hosted a mix of 90 students and 30 employers, ranging from large corporations;to midsize local organizations and sole proprietorships. Among the professionals were several successful Comm alumni including Ken Sterling of Big Speak, Sara Tilotson and Alexandria Banks of Ontraport, Lauren Dorsey of Target, and Cathleen Dunne of Enterprise. Advice from a panel of 4 employers and 2 interns helped students understand the process of expectations for intern-mentor relationships. Introductions of all professional followed, before opening the floor for an hour of highly productive networking. Rachel Cansler, the Communication Association Director of Events, brought these employers together, structured the panel and moderated the session.

Appreciation goes to Brittany Manzer of Career Services for collaborating with the Association to create a complementary schedule for the Internship Mixer and Career Services' Internship Week, and for scheduling their Marketing and Communication Internship panel immediately preceding our event.

The Department’s Communication Alumni Council covered the costs for renting Corwin Pavilion, and Ken Sterling of Big Speak donated funds for virtually all the other expenses.

One student commented that this was more productive for her than typical Career Fairs because these professional were specifically seeking to employ Comm majors.
